What are speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)?
Speech, language and communication needs refers to difficulties in one or more areas of communication, including understanding language, forming words and sentences, and using language in social situations. These needs can affect a child’s ability to communicate effectively with others, express their needs and ideas, and understand what others are saying.
- Speech:This refers to the physical act of producing spoken sounds, including difficulties with articulation, fluency (stammering or stuttering), or voice quality (hoarseness).
- Language:This encompasses the understanding and use of words, sentences, and grammatical structures, including difficulties with vocabulary, sentence formation, and understanding different grammatical rules.
- Communication:This involves the broader aspects of interacting with others, including social rules, turn-taking, and understanding non-verbal cues like facial expressions and body language.
- Receptive Language:Difficulty understanding what others say.
- Expressive Language:Difficulty using words and sentences to express oneself.
- Social Communication and Pragmatics:Difficulty with the social aspects of communication, such as turn-taking, following social rules, and understanding non-verbal cues.
