At Beech Hill School, it is our intent that all children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep them safe and healthy in their life past education. Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) plays an integral role in this and, as a school, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life.<\/p>\n

How our PSHE curriculum is constructed<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Following the Jigsaw scheme, PSHE is taught across the school from Reception – Year 6 on a weekly basis. The scheme equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.<\/p>\n

The Jigsaw scheme has six units that are listed below. Within each unit there are six lessons (Puzzle Pieces) that aim to provide children with:<\/p>\n

– accurate and relevant knowledge<\/p>\n

– opportunities to create personal understanding<\/p>\n

– opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities<\/p>\n

– a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life<\/p>\n

  1. Being Me in My World<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters.<\/p>\n

    1. Celebrating Difference<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Includes anti-bullying and diversity work.<\/p>\n

      1. Dreams and Goals<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Includes goal-setting, aspirations for yourself and the world and working together.<\/p>\n

        1. Healthy Me<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Includes self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.<\/p>\n

          1. Relationships<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills.<\/p>\n

            1. Changing Me<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              This puzzle includes relationships education in the context of coping positively with change.<\/p>\n

              Cultural Capital in PSHE<\/strong><\/h4>\n

              Alongside the Jigsaw scheme of work, we have a range of activities to enhance the children\u2019s PSHE journey throughout the year.<\/p>\nPhotos-2<\/a>\n

              Verd de Gris – Light Up Our Lives <\/strong><\/p>\n

              In 2022-2023, Year 6 took part in a project with Verd de gris, a local social impact company, in order to learn about and celebrate Black African heritage and culture. This involved drumming, singing, creative writing and creative arts. We were also delighted to work alongside members of the local Black African community in order to understand more about their traditions, exploring our similarities and differences and understanding how to respect these.<\/p>\n

              The culmination of this project was an uplifting and inspiring performance at the Viaduct Theatre on Tuesday 21st March along with children from Holy Trinity Primary School, Sharon (Verd de gris), Teresa (singing teacher), Phil (drumming teacher), Bola (Light Up Bahc) and members of the local community. It was fantastic to see our children showcase the new talents they have learnt and some were even brave enough to share the words they had written about their views of the world and how it should be.<\/p>\n

              We are incredibly proud of everything the children have achieved! <\/strong><\/p>\n

              Fly away in a world, where the Earth is full of joy,
              \nWhere the broken rise up and greed doesn\u2019t sit on the soul,
              \nWhere every man is free and peers through his window to see that peace is past the Dawn,
              \nNo other man will scorn the Earth and all will know freedom\u2019s pathway,
              \nThe bounties of the Earth is a pearl of such I dream a world,
              \nLove, will bless the world and attend the needs of all mankind.
              \nBlack or white, whatever race you be,
              \nNo man will be broken
              \nwith love in a world of joy.<\/p>\n

              Whether you fear, or don\u2019t fear your mistakes,
              \nIt doesn\u2019t matter in a world that you dream, where mistakes are your solutions,
              \nand your solutions fix the life of your soul to be the best you can be.
              \nGreed, distrust, racism, and all the other problems leave your soul in a perfect world to leave it in peace.<\/p>\n
